Creative Process…

Wading my way through various forms of visual activism including, graffiti, posters, sculptures and art installations and film, I’ve set out on somewhat of a stencil approach to develop my creative piece.  Instead of using spray or roll-on paint as my medium, I’ve decided to use light and projection in order to more effectively communicate the way in which societies around the world “see through” child abuse.

The stencil is meant to represent an abused child holding onto silence as their comforting oppressor.

My first attempt at creating a “stencil” was shockingly dismal as it barely let enough light through to allow the viewer to identify it’s shape, let alone it’s intended meaning. It did manage to serve as inspiration for the second attempt though.

This first iteration was driven by the idea that while there’s so much discussion and movement around the topic of child abuse nothing is being done, nothing changes – if the message was “Let’s not talk about it”, perhaps society would stop and think, maybe then we could take a fresh approach and finally begin to empower victims of child abuse.

While the second iteration allowed for much more light to pass through it, the details of the face were blurry and failed to convey substance.  The lettering at the base was undefined and ineffective.  The corny power plug face was clearly counter productive when trying to highlight empowerment.

For the third iteration I set aside the plug face, filled in the base text and let the undefined shape of the child convey its ghostly qualities.

The size of the stencil as well as the inclusion of detailing around the head may need to be reconsidered in order to achieve a more desirable result, but I’m please that it’s starting to come together.
